It was then off to Nurburgring which goes down as my worst weekend in DTM so far!
Qualifying went really well, especially considering I didn’t get to grips with the car there last year. Despite being in a strong position in the race, I had to retire after I had a coming together with my team mate. Unfortunately he dived up the inside of me at turn one. As my right wing mirror had been damaged at the start, I didn’t see him and we collided forcing us both to retire at the team’s home race. Not good news!
I didn’t have long to put the disappointment of the Nurburgring race behind me before I was back there racing again, only this time not in the DTM but in an Audi R8 and on the Nordschleife. That was probably the craziest race I’ve ever done with 200 cars competing - a real variety in terms of cars at that (not to mention driving ability). On top of this, you the track is over 24km’s long! The whole weekend was a real experience and one I’m very grateful to Team Phoenix for allowing me to do.
From there it was almost straight on to my home race at Brands Hatch. I love racing back in the UK and it’s always nice to be at Brands, a track that I’ve had success in Renault and Formula 3 in the past. Again we were quick all weekend but unfortunately just missed out on making it into Q3 so had to settle for P9 on the grid. However in the race I was able to make several places before being hit from behind from a fellow Brit which moved me back to 12th place. From there, I managed to climb back up to 10th before a late safety car and a few retirements in front meant I eventually crossed the line in 8th scoring a point. So even though it could have been so much better at least I was able to take a point away from the weekend.
After Brands, I stayed in the UK for a couple of days during which time I was able to grab a couple of hours’ kitesurfing. Then it was a flight back to Switzerland.
