DTM DRAMA IN DIJON
Spectators at the first DTM held at Dijon Prenois (11 Oct) witnessed one of the most turbulent races of all time on the high speed circuit in France in a race that was all tyre preservation on this demanding track.

The conditions during a wet qualifying could hardly have been more difficult, with varying degrees of rain throughout all four sessions. Oliver Jarvis was 10th fastest in Qualifying and once more, the quickest driver of a year old Audi A4 DTM.

“Despite the changing weather, Qualifying was fun.   We missed out on the third qualifying session by a tenth.  The car felt good and this was probably the maximum we could achieve with the additional weight so I was satisfied with our performance,” said Oliver after Saturday’s Qualifying.

Race day was blighted by tyre wear problems for many drivers, not least 25 year old Oliver who fell victim to a puncture near the closing stages of the race.  He made a brilliant start, gaining several places into the first corner but a nudge from Mercedes driver Gary Paffett to the right rear of Oliver’s car pushed him out into the dirt, proving costly in losing race position.  Afterwards, the car lacked speed throughout the race.

“The first stint was pretty decent,” says Oliver “Timo (Scheider) and Martin (Tomczyk) overtook me and after that, I was not able to keep the pace of my team-mate Alex (Prémat).  The puncture just topped the day off and was very disappointing.  That said, it was a fun race and I’m looking forward to a lighter car in Hockenheim.”

After the race, Head of Audi Motorsport, Dr Wolfgang Ullrich said, “We knew that the track at Dijon would be critical for tyres, but thought we had the problem under control – there were no indications during warm-up.  But in the race we had a whole series of punctures, which is not helpful when you’re fighting for the Championship.  After the first defect, we tried to control the pace to get through the race – unfortunately, not all drivers managed to do that.”

The DTM finale for 2009 takes place in Hockenheim on 24/25 October.
