| Suzuka Double Podium for Jarvis |
|
Oliver Jarvis put in another solid performance for TOM’S Toyota in the All Japan F3 Championship at the weekend achieving two podium finishes in Rounds 3 and 4 in Suzuka. The 23 year old who is based in Japan this season finished second and third respectively, currently standing him in second place in the Championship.
Changing track conditions in the first qualifying session meant that Jarvis had to be content with starting the first race from third position on the grid. His second qualifying session proved stronger in terms of pace but couldn’t quite match that of pole sitter, Roberto Streit and a slight error on his quick lap allowed Kazuya Oshima and Hiroaki Ishiura to secure second and third on the grid, leaving Jarvis in fourth despite his improved pace.
Some wheelspin off the line in the first race of the day (Round 3), prevented Jarvis from moving up a place from his third position start. He pushed hard in the opening laps pursuing Streit, constantly applying pressure on the Brazilian. Eventually Jarvis’ patience paid dividends and a small mistake by Streit gave opportunity for Jarvis to pass on the inside of turn one. Pulling away, Jarvis set to closing the gap between himself and TOM’S team-mate Oshima, who had opened up a comfortable lead during the enduring battle between Streit and Jarvis. Although Jarvis did close the gap, he could not challenge for the race victory and finished in a respectable second place.
Determined for even further improvement in the second race, Jarvis made a superb start allowing him to power past Oshima. He then set about challenging Ishiura (who had also passed Oshima off the grid) for second place but Jarvis wasn’t far enough ahead into the first corner so Ishiura maintained his position.
“I just hit the limiter as I was overtaking Oshima which cost me a bit of time so I didn’t get the gap I needed into the first corner which was a shame and in the early stages I was struggling with car balance and oversteer,” explained Jarvis. Jarvis soon adapted his style and set about closing the gap between himself and Ishiura, conscious that Oshima was now pushing hard behind in fourth. Despite the pressure and Oshima closing right up in the slipstream, Jarvis defended his position to finish the race in third and take to the podium steps once more.“It’s not often you come away from a weekend disappointed with two podiums but after pre-season testing I was expecting more!” comments Oliver Jarvis. “That said, I’m still second in the Championship and I shall be working hard for even better results, especially when it comes to maximizing the qualifying on the Bridgestone tyres.” |
